The Saint:

Neeb Karoli Baba (popularly known as The Maharaj ji) was very popular among the westerners, he used to sit on an elevated cot in the Kainchi Dham temple. He covered his body in a large shawl and was surrounded by followers all the time. The most common story among his followers is that –

“The moment you enter his temple he knows who you are, why you came to him, your name, occupation, and a lot about yourself even before your introduction.”

One such incident happened with Ram dass (Richard Alpert – Harvard University Professor) where he stood perplexed when Maharaji told him about his thoughts from last night. He later became his follower and also wrote a book on him named BE HERE NOW.

Steve Jobs – Co-Founder of Apple

Steve Job was struggling in his career, he dropped out of college when he found himself more inclined towards spirituality. That was when he read the book written by Ram Das BE HERE NOW. Then and there he decided to meet this Indian Guru.

On his arrival in India, he was disappointed to know that Maharaj Ji had died 4 months earlier. He stayed at Kainchi Dham for a couple of days and summed up his overall journey to India as

“Coming back to America was, for me, much more of a cultural shock than going to India. The people in the Indian countryside don’t use their intellect like we do, they use their intuition instead, and their intuition is far more developed than in the rest of the world. Intuition is a very powerful thing, more powerful than intellect, in my opinion. That had a  big impact on my work”

Mark Zukerberg – The co-founder of Facebook

Mark was in big trouble with Facebook’s future when one day he received a call from Steve Jobs and here is how he describes it.

“He (Jobs) told me that in order to reconnect with what I believed as the mission of the company I should visit this temple that he had gone to in India, early on in his evolution of thinking about what he wanted Apple and his vision of the future to be”

“So I went and I traveled for almost a month, and seeing people, seeing how people connected, and having the opportunity to feel how much better the world could be if everyone has a strong ability to connect reinforced for me the importance of what we were doing and that is something I’ve always remembered over the last 10 years as we’ve built Facebook.”

Larry Brilliant: Earlier Director of Google

Larry Brilliant stayed in India at Kainchi Dham for three years, when Maharaji forced him to leave and asked him to follow his advice to join the WHO(World Health Organization). Larry earlier rejected with no experience in the field, but later joined on much pressure from the Neeb Karori Baba and has made a legendary contribution in the eradication of smallpox.

He later advised Larry Page – Co-founder of Google and both of them visited the Ashram together.
